Seed Secure Meghalaya: Establishment of Low-Cost Formal and Informal Potato Seed Production System to Enhance Food Security and Income Generation

This project is mainly based on a noble technology developed by International Potato Center(CIP)for production of Apical Rooted Cuttings ( ARCs) in production of seed tubers. This project is being funded by IFAD investment in the ‘Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project’ (Megha-LAMP) implemented by MBDA and has three collaborating agency viz., Directorate of Horticulture (DoH) ,Govt of Meghalaya, Meghalaya Basin Management agency (MBMA) and Bio Resources Development Center (BRDC) with technical support from CIP.

The main objective is to overcome underlying technological and social constraints to improve the potato industry in the State and address income generation of small and marginal farmers, to develop the potato seed value chain in the state to improve productivity in the state and to supply high quality seed potato to neighboring states at affordable prices.

On the 17th May 2023 the Chief Minister Shri Conrad Sangma and Agricultural Minister Smt Ampareen Lyngdoh visited the tissue culture Lab of the Center and the poly house to get a first hand tour of this scientific intervention in Potato Seed production through this technology.
