The Tissue Culture Laboratory of the Centre has worked extensively on micro propagation of orchids and horticultural crops that has both commercial and medicinal value. Micropropagation of indigenous orchid species through tissue culture has been taken up in the Centre with the primary objective of conservation and production of quality planting materials. In-situ conservation is facilitated through the planting of the tissue cultured orchids into Community managed forests.
Under the state funded projects the Centre is micro propagating various indigenous orchids like Cymbidium species and Dendrobium sp; horticultural crops like tree tomato (Solanum betacum) , indigenous banana species (Musa sp)and have recently initiated in micro propagating of species like Lakadong tumeric.
The Centre is also working in collaboration with Meghalaya Basin Management Agency(MBMA) and International Potato Centre (CIP) under the project title “ Seed Secure Meghalaya : Establishment of low cost formal and informal potato seed production system to enhance food security and income generation.” for production of virus free tissue cultured potato planting material in producing Apical Rooted Cuttings( ARCs) saplings that are distributed to farmers for quality seed tubers production.
